Search My Heart

“Dear children, keep away from anything that might take God’s place in your hearts.” 1 John 5:21

This scripture gives us guidance. It says to keep away from anything— people, relationships, or things that might take God’s place in our hearts. It’s very point blank. Sometimes we put these things in front of God and don’t even realize we’re doing it. Whether it be our boyfriend/girlfriend, friends, music, tv, or even sleeping… anything that keeps us away from putting God first or takes away our time with Him has to go. I know for myself it’s so easy for me to just want to keep binge watching shows on Netflix or scroll through social media instead of digging into my word. I notice that when I choose to do those things I can feel the gap between me and God, or distance. However, when I set aside time to be with Him I feel so close. There’s a greater feeling in growing in relationship with God, rather than putting Him off. You make think you’re happy while doing other things, but the sense of joy, peace, or even the revelation you can get from reading your word is 10x more worth it. I’m speaking to myself when I say that. That’s something I personally can work on and an example. Yours may be different!

“Investigate my life, O God, find out everything about me; Cross-examine and test me, get a clear picture of what I’m about; See for yourself whether I’ve done anything wrong— then guide me on the road to eternal life.” Psalm 139:23-24

To go along with the reading in 1 John, this scripture gives us an awesome guideline for a prayer to speak out over whatever it is we have placed in front of God in our hearts. If you don’t have the words to say or can’t exactly pinpoint what it is in your life that is holding position in God’s spot, pray out the scripture above. Simply ask God to search your heart and to remove anything taking place over Him.
